Pets aren’t just our companions, they’re valuable family members as well. They’re with us every day, through the good times and the bad. That said, it should be of utmost importance that they receive proper love and care. We need to know what works best for our feline and canine friends so that their happiness is always ensured. Here are some helpful tips to keep your dog’s tails wagging and your cats purring in delight.

Bond with Them

Pets are social beings by nature, dogs particularly so. Unfortunately, there are times when we can’t avoid leaving them alone at home which could lead them to feel bored or lonely. Make sure that you plan regular relaxation time with your pets. Lounging on the couch while watching television is one easy way to bond with your pet. Another simple way to bond with them is to plan their meals to coincide with yours. Pets need a connection with their owners, so make them feel special by giving them your complete attention even if just a few minutes at a time throughout a day. Rub their bellies, pat their heads, pick up their favorite toy and play with them. They love these moments with you.

Give Them Exercise and Playtime

Pets that get to move freely and explore their surroundings tend to have a happier disposition than those that are always cooped up. Reserve a portion of your week to get your buddy to focus on some play and exercise. Bring your pet to the park to socialize with people and other pets. Not only will this get you out of the house, it will also give you both a very much needed workout as well.

Teach Them Something New

Idle paws are the devil’s playground. Teach your old dog new tricks to keep their brain sharp and active. Mental stimulation is very important for your pet. Consider this as another way to spend time with them as well. You can teach them to fetch your things or make them do cute little tricks like balancing treats on their nose.

Train Them to Learn Their Boundaries

Having an obedient pet reflects very much on the master. Setting boundaries is very important and if you do this right, they will acquire good habits that will benefit both of you in the long run. Teach your cat to use the litter box or your dog to go outside when they need to do their business. Not only will they enjoy the training treats, but they’ll also get less scolding in the future. You can train them yourself, hire a professional or join discipline classes – find whichever works best for the both of you. Your pet will be happy knowing they can keep up with your expectations.

Hygiene and Proper Grooming

Don’t underestimate what cleanliness can do for your pet’s well-being. Regular baths help them feel fresh and keeps pesky fleas off their coats. This also helps to prevent sickness and avoid unnecessary exposure to harmful germs. Thorough brushing helps remove dead hair, dirt and debris. Be sure to check their eyes and nails as well. Professional grooming sessions in between may also be much appreciated by your furry buddy.

Show Appreciation

Praising your pets verbally and physically is a great way to maintain a nurturing relationship with them. It will give them confidence knowing they are appreciated for their efforts. Positive reinforcement makes your pet feel comfortable, secure and loved.
