Michigan Summer Adventures You Can Do With Your Pet
Summertime is a chance for everyone to stretch their legs and go on an adventure. Trips to the beach, hiking in the mountains, or even just a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood are all favorite activities for humans. But what about pets? While they may have no concept of a vacation, they still enjoy a lot of the same outdoor activities we do! Today we’ll be going over some ways you can keep your pet entertained even in the midst of the summer heat.
Let’s get physical
Summer is a great time to exercise outdoors. There’s a wide variety of exercises you can do out on your lawn, in the park, or at the playground. Yoga and bodyweight exercises are a favorite because you need next to no equipment and they can be done nearly anywhere. Why not take your pet out with you and get them some much-needed exercise as well? It’ll help them burn off some energy and it’s also a great way to have them socialize. Sometimes pets can even be taught to follow along to your routine! It may make getting those pushups harder when your dog is constantly trying to scooch under you, but it’s straight up adorable.
Just 10 to 15 minutes of having your cat or dog run around can be enough on a daily basis, just be mindful of keeping them on a leash or harness so they can’t run off if they get too excited. Sedentary animals have a shorter lifespan so if you want to have your pet with you for as long as possible, this is a great activity.
Take a dip
Summer is the season for water activities. Whether it be at a lake, pool, or beach, now is the best time to catch some rays and cool off all at once. Your pet may appreciate getting a chance to take a swim as well—certain breeds of dog are avid swimmers, and some cats may even enjoy it as well (depending on your cat, of course). The only real precaution you need to take is possibly a pet life vest. Yes, they can be strong natural swimmers, but even then, they can get tired or panicked. These are especially important if you’re going to be going boating with your pet. An unexpected tumble off the deck can mean they aren’t prepared to swim!
If taking your pet to a pool, just be sure to schedule a potty break beforehand—our pets can’t read the “no peeing in the pool” signs!
If you can’t access any bodies of water, a sprinkler in the yard may be enough! Our pets love to chase the water and enjoy the cool feeling it gives them once they’re soaked.
Spend some nights in the great outdoors
Camping is another great summertime activity where you can take your pet. In fact, they may be even more comfortable sleeping outdoors than you are! It depends on where you take your pet, of course, and you should always check whether pets are allowed at any campgrounds or parks you’re going to. But if possible, it can be a great chance for both you and your pet to reconnect with nature. Just remember to pick up after your pet as you don’t want any other campers stumbling on their droppings.
Go for a ride
Hitting the open road in your choice of transportation is something a lot of people enjoy, and their pets as well—whether it be on a long road trip in the family van, or a day trip on the bike. Now’s the time to see the country in all its summertime glory, and your pets can take part too. There are pet carriers that hook on to bikes, cats and dogs can be comfortable in cars, and even just skateboarding around town can be fun with your dog leading the way. You might need to make pit stops when your pet needs to go potty, and you’ll need food to last your entire trip and a little more—don’t count on always being able to get pet food that your pet will like! It’s always better to be prepared.
